"A gale force Southeaster howled through the Bo-Kaap, as we lurched into an eatery in Chiappini Street. With a flourish, our host presented the ‘specials’ of the day: Salomies, Gatsbys and Rooties for ‘take away’, but if we wanted to ‘eat in’, he offered Biryani : succulent chicken shredded into flavoured rice with onions, potatoes, red lentils, hard boiled eggs and a delicious curry sauce - the kind of food that comforts all the senses. Later we promised ourselves we would be back. This Biryani is worth a detour!"
The iconic spice flavours of the Bo-Kaap built on a base of sweet vegetables - carrots and sweet potatoes - means it has real depth of flavour.
Delicious as a table sauce on grilled or oven-roasted chicken or lamb. Also on butternut, sweet potatoes, baked onion and potato, and egg dishes with rice (like Biryani!).
TIP: Adding a spiced sauce to a dish provides instant spice flavour: just add it and heat it - its all there!
